The story Behind

Article: Black & white print on Lenox acid free paper

Image size: 12"x12", Paper size: 15"X15.75". It is a limited edition of 35 prints, each individually printed by the artist.

This print is a part of the series, 'Lessons Learned from Six-year Olds'.

The inspiration for this print came from the following incident.

Our lives tend to become very mechanical and habitual when we get caught up in the day to day realities of surviving from one day to the next. Most of the time we operate in the 'autopilot' mode not taking time to pause and reflect upon what is happening around us.

One day my six-year old granddaughter, Shaela grabbed her mother's hat and pulled it over her face. Her face was completely covered except her chin.

She giggled and uttered playfully, "Who turned the lights out?"

'Who turned the lights out?' The sentence hit me like a ton of bricks. The words kept ringing in my head. It made me realize that it is we ourselves who turn the lights out.

We shut out whatever is happening around us. We are in survival mode going from one day to next. We keep doing normal everyday things like robots, as if we are programmed to do certain chores at certain times.

We spend hardly any time in reflecting and looking beyond our nose.

It is important to not go through life with blinders on. Take time to reflect and think about what is important and why we are doing what we are doing.

50% from the sale of this print is donated to Atlantic Wellness Community Centre.
