Baptist Church

This image of Sackville Baptist Church on Main Street is from a colorized postcard.

The Baptist Church on Main Street and the one in Middle Sackville trace their origin to the first Baptist congregation in Canada near Morice's Mill Pond/Silver Lake.

In 1763 thirteen Baptist settlers from Swansea, Massachusetts landed at Slack's Cove. Majority of these settlers returned to Massachusetts in 1771. Under the leadership of Joseph Crandall the congregation was reconstituted in 1798.

With the growth of the community the number of churchgoers increased. A division occurred. Those north of the Ogden Mill Road attended the Middle Sackville Baptist church and those living south of this attended the Main Street Baptist church.

The present day Main Street Baptist Church was constructed in 1890. Later, a Christian education wing was added in 1960s.
