Carriages were commonly used as a means of transportation.
The Campbell Carriage factory, established in 1855, had a flourishing business for nearly a hundred years. The Campbell family constructed good quality carriages, serving the transportation related needs of the community for nearly a hundred years.
The two storey factory building had four rooms, two on each floor. The woodworking and machinery rooms were on the ground floor and assembly and painting rooms were on the second floor.
The machinery operated with horse power. A horse-driven overhead belt system supplied power to all the work stations.
A blacksmith shop at the back of the factory made all the bespoke metal components for carriages, sleighs and wagons.
The image depicts one of the types of carriages built at this factory. Once the automobiles became popular, the carriages were gradually abandoned. The article, 'History of the Campbell Carriage Factory' contains more information about the factory [ Link ]
