The Acadian settlers made Tantramar area their home in early 1700s [ link ] .
Five Acadian families first made this area their home - Gaudet, Hache, Bernard, Bourg, and Richard.
The areas known today as Upper Sackville, Middle Sackville and Sackville had different names as shown in the map - Pré des Bourg (Sackville), Pré des Richard (Middle Sackville), and Tintamarre (Upper Sackville).
When the Acadian settlers first arrived in this area, they heard a constant noise of the tidal waves and migratory birds. 'Tintamarre' means cacophonous din. This is what gave this area the name Tantramar marsh.
The Acadian farmers spent much of their time making the dykes in order to reclaim the marshlands and cultivate crops on them. The reclaimed marshes led to productivity of agricultural goods and cattle trade.
