The image is of ladies college lawn drill in 1909. Ladies College was established in 1854 as the female branch of the Wesleyan Academy for boys.
It was situated by a pond with water fountain surrounded by grassy hill and flower beds.
Mount Allison University was among the first private colleges to offer physical education to female students. The year was 1854. Female branch of the Wesleyan Academy had just opened, which was later called Ladies College.
In 1864 a new gymnasium was constructed. Julia Goodhue was hired as the first instructor in calisthenics.
It is noteworthy that along with emphasis on high academic standards, the educators of the Ladies College believed in the benefits of physical activity in a secluded setting. Hence, lawn drill was an organized physical activity for female students.
