A loom is a device used to weave cloth and tapestry. It used to be a common household item in the past. The women would spin the yarn and then weave cloth from the spun yarn. This image of a loom is from a photograph taken in St. James Textile Museum in Dorchester.

Handwoven textiles were quite common in New Brunswick in the 19th century. As you can well imagine, many of the families didn't have enough resources to buy the clothing. Handwoven clothing made from yarn spun at home was not only economical but was also a source of income. Traditionally many Acadian women did weaving of cloth. Market conditions also had a role to play on the making of hand-woven textiles.
