Hay barns are iconic of the Tantramar marsh landscape.
Barns, 30’ x 40’ in dimension, were built by farmers to store hay brought in by horse driven carts. They served as a warehouse for storage.
Eastern Hay and Feed company, which eventually turned into Atlantic Wholesalers, made these barns to store hay till it was shipped.
According to the article published by CBC, ‘Tantramar Marsh Hay Barns Disappearing’ , at one time there were 400 barns. Now barely 13 remain.
