Marshlands Inn is a colonial house built in 1850s by William Crane for his daughter Ruth Crane. He had built another house as a wedding gift for Ruth on Bridge Street which faced the street.
Ruth wanted a house facing east so she could see the rising Sun. Consequently, this house, which is Marshlands Inn now, was built in 1854. Even today, this is the only house on Bridge street that doesn't have a front door facing the street. Ruth and her husband Edward Cogswell lived in this house till 1895.
After the death of Edward Cogswell, the house was purchased by Henry C. Read in 1896. He named it 'Marshlands' because of the proximity of Tantramar marshes. Henry C. Read and his son Herbert Read were involved in the grindstone business.
In 1905 a second story was added to the original building. Later it was turned into an Inn. The image here is of Marshlands Inn in 1905. You will see a horse standing in front of the entrance.
