Tantramar Marsh

The name ‘Tantramar’ comes from the French word, ‘tintamarre’, referring to the noise made by wild geese and rushing tides.  Tall grasses are a signature plant of Tantramar marsh, a large saltwater tidal marsh stretching over 20,000 hectares. It is an ideal habitat for shore birds, and many species of wildlife. Acadians started reclaiming the marsh by building dykes in late 1600s. The nutrient rich soil with silt deposits is ideal for growing hay, wild rice, and different types of plants.
