The beginning of academic year 1901-02 brought a major change to women's athletics. This year was the beginning of two team sports for women- basketball and hockey. The first university hockey team was formed in 1884 at McGill University. Seven years later the women of Ladies College in Sackville New Brunswick organized their own hockey team. Hockey had been a male-dominated sport until then.
This is an image of Mount Allison University Ladies' College and varsity hockey team in 1907-08. The women are wearing long skirts, which would be the appropriate attire at that time period. The women are proudly holding their hockey sticks as they pose for the photograph. This is an example of the opportunities given to women for focusing on physical fitness along with academic achievements at Mount Allison University.
