Approximately 2000 people came from Yorkshire to settle in Nova Scotia, which included a part of New Brunswick back then, between 1772-1775.
Just before the American Revolution, General Franklin of Nova Scotia had brought a large number of people from Yorkshire, England. They came at their own expense and purchased land.
Roughly a thousand of these Yorkshire settlers settled in the Chignecto Isthmus area. Many families made Dorchester their home.
This wooden chair occupied a place of honour for many years in the Dorchester United Church (formerly Methodist Church).
It is believed to have accompanied the first group of Yorkshire settlers who arrived between 1772-1775. The chair is believed to have been given to the settlers by John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church.
Later it was donated to the Keillor House Museum.
